Stephen Hawking Stephen William Hawking (7 January 19–18 March 2014)), a world-renowned British physicist, cosmologist, author and research director of the Center for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge.

early life
Stephen Hawking was born in Oxford on 23 January 1942 [23] to Frank (19 05–1986) and Isabel Ellen Hawking (nee Walker; 1915–2013). Hawking's mother was born into a family of doctors in Glasgow, Scotland. His wealthy paternal grandfather from Yorkshire had extended himself to buying agricultural land and then went bankrupt in the great agricultural depression of the early 20th century. His paternal grandmother ruined the family financially by opening a school in his home. Despite his family's financial constraints, both parents attended Oxford University, where Frank studied medicine and Isabel taught philosophy, politics and economics. Isabel worked as a secretary of a medical research institute, and Frank was a medical researcher. Hawking had two younger sisters, Philippa and Mary, and an adopted brother, Edward Frank David (1955–2003).

In 1950, when Hawking's father became head of the Division of Parasitology at the National Institute for Medical Research, his family moved to St Albans, Hertfordshire. In St. Albans, his family was considered very intelligent and somewhat eccentric; Food in his family was often spent quietly reading a book. They lived in a frugal existence in a large, cluttered and poorly maintained house and traveled in a converted London taxicab. During Hawking's father's absence working in Africa, the rest of the family spent four months in Majorca at the home of his mother's friend Beryl and her husband, the poet Robert Graves.

Work
Stephen Hawking contributed significantly to the understanding of the black hole and the Big Bang theory. He received 12 honorary degrees and America's highest civilian honor.
